Radio versus Podcast: The preferred medium in Pakistan

The invention and advent of the streaming platform, podcast gave a tough competition to the radio. A podcast is a series of audio files that can be easily downloaded to smart devices having access to the internet. It became very famous among the youth because like radio, it is not time-bound, you do not have to wait until a certain time to listen to a podcast, it is readily available on the internet. Moreover, it also gives you the authority to rewind, in case you missed something, or you can also listen to the same podcast repeatedly.

One can also download the podcast of their own choice from the internet. However, radio does not provide you such power as the content provided on the radio channels is live and it is not necessary the content available on radio channels will cater to one’s preferences. The podcast is generally cheaper to use than radio, as in to start or record a podcast episode all you need to have is a mic and a recording program installed, and then you can get going, contrary to the radio content which has to be recorded in a radio station with heavy and expensive equipment.

The increasing popularity and significance of podcasts, in today’s world, is undeniable. But in context to life in Pakistan, radio is the better option as compared to podcast. Pakistan is a developing country and not everybody in our country has access to the internet. Many people here are technologically handicapped and struggle due to a lack of education and awareness. In such circumstances, the majority of people adhere to listening to the radio which is easily available and is convenient for them.

Talking about the feasible medium to broadcast education and public awareness programs such as Taleem-e-Balighan, a popular drama that aired on Radio Pakistan in the 1950s, radio is preferably the better choice. It would easily reach all the masses, irrespective of their societal status, age, educational qualification, the area of living, and also, you do not need to have the technological know-how to access the radio channels, unlike the podcast which is mostly streamed by the young, educated and tech-savvy lot or the ones who have access to the internet. Radio works without the internet, which is one of the basic reasons it is prioritized to podcast in Pakistan.
